Artificial intelligence is transforming marketing (and the world) faster than any innovation in recent memory. From automated ad placement and predictive analytics to AI-generated copy and design, tools once considered futuristic are now everyday essentials.

But as AI becomes more sophisticated, so does the risk of losing what makes marketing truly effective — its humanity. Those businesses and organizations that understand how to avoid that risk are those who will come out on top. Here’s why, and how you can ensure your business is among them…

1. Understand WHY You’re In Business, and Always Put Your Unique Purpose First

First, let me state the obvious: of course, business owners are in business to make a living, and a profit. Even nonprofits need to keep finances top of mind so they can stay solvent and keep doing the work they exist to do. But for most business owners and organizational leaders, there’s also a higher purpose that drives them – a passion, a cause, an impact on others that serves a purpose other than their own bottom line.

That purpose, and the connection it creates with those it serves, is where the humanity of business lies – which is what distinguishes you from competitors. And that most important and impactful ingredient is what can most easily be lost by relying too heavily on AI for your marketing and communications.

At Dunn Marketing, we’ve seen firsthand that the most effective aspect of marketing doesn’t come from machines. It comes from meaning. That’s why we believe empathy — not efficiency — will be the defining differentiator for marketing success in 2026 and beyond.

2. Use AI As A Tool to Differentiate, Not A Crutch to Keep Up

Everyone will be using AI to become more efficient. That makes it an operational imperative, not a strategic advantage.

The efficiency afforded by leveraging AI is something that no organization will be able to survive without, that is certain. Without it, your competitors will leave you in the dust. But adding it to your operations will be the equivalent of just keeping up with the Joneses’. It’s not going to get you ahead, at least not in the long run as it becomes the standard operation for everyone.

But those who learn to leverage it strategically as a tool for amplifying real human connection will stand out. In a world increasingly dominated by machine algorithms delivering machine-generated messaging, those brands that keep humanity at the heart of their marketing, communications, and operations will do so much more than survive – they will thrive.

3. Rely on Humanity for Substance, AI for Tactics

Empathy has always been a business advantage, even if it’s only recently become fashionable to say so. And that truth will only become clearer in the years ahead. That’s why our Empathy-Driven Brand Building™ process is built on understanding real human motivation, then crafting messaging and experiences that genuinely connect.

When it comes to leveraging AI in that process, we use it as a tool to turbocharge the mechanisms of how those connections are made, but never a substitute for establishing what that connection is made of.

In 2026 and beyond, the most successful brands won’t be the most automated. They’ll be the most authentic.

Empathy, and the strong sense of connection it creates, will remain the one thing AI can’t replicate — and the one thing your audience will always respond to, and perhaps crave even more as their lives become increasingly filled with “AI slop.”

So, as you create your marketing and communications plans for 2026 and beyond, you should absolutely explore how AI can help to strengthen your efforts. Just be careful to ensure it remains a tool to amplify how your business connects with your audience, and not a runaway machine that eventually makes the soul of your organization a static, synthetic version of what it used to be.

Passion. Originality. Evolution. Mission. Impact.

These are uniquely human traits and goals that cannot be replaced. In a future dominated by AI, they are your superpowers. Use them.
